"Senkan"
The gentle flow of water that meanders through rocks, creating eddies. This ancient Japanese word refers to the continuous, soft, and somewhat secretive sound and movement of water.
It is known as a word that appears in "The Tale of Genji" and adds a poetic breath to waterside scenery. The great writer Jun'ichirō Tanizaki was also fond of this word, naming his Kyoto residence "Senkan-tei" (Senkan Pavilion), and it is said that he completed his translation of "The Tale of Genji" amidst the atmosphere of its quiet, watery sound.
This work is a white porcelain vessel inspired by the flow and poetic sentiment embodied in the word "Senkan." It is suitable for use as a mukozuke (small dish served with sake) or a small bowl. The shape of the vessel traces a gentle flow of water, and its subtly twisted, swirling contours softly draw in light and shadow, creating an appearance as if the water surface is quietly circulating.
Its form guides the eye to the center, making the food served in it stand out as if floating on water. The curves that change expression depending on the viewing angle, combined with the delicate reflections unique to white porcelain, create a quietness within movement. This vessel embodies such serene beauty.
